To Our Viking Supporters

We are embarking on a major effort to modernize our Weight Room this spring.  The major focus is getting our equipment updated to maximize our strength development. We want to keep our programs performing at championship levels across the board.  We have been able to do that thus far, but it is becoming more difficult as we are training on equipment that was originally purchased in 1990 while our conference opponents have had major renovations in recent years. This renovation will be a huge addition to our Athletic Programs.   Strength and Speed Training is a championship factor in every sport and we take a lot of pride in the work that our student-athletes put into their training.

Equipment We Need

  • 20 Power Racks
  • New Plyo Boxes
  • Additional Bars and Bumpers to have the stations uniform across the room.
  • Rubber Dumbells
  • New Rubber Flooring
    • Hurricane Florence necessitated the use of our mats for shelter evacuees which resulted in unavoidable, but permanent damage to the mats.
  • Supplemental Materials:
    • Tsunami Bars
    • Medicine Balls
    • Battle Ropes
    • Prowler Sleds

What We Hope to Accomplish

The primary goal of this project is to give our strength coaches the ability to program specific needs for athletes across the room and to more efficiently coach them on their movements in the weight room.

Our plan is to start by adding power racks.  Power racks are training stations that include a vertical rack, a bench, weight storage, a pull-up/resistance band bar, and more.  This addition will significantly improve the effectiveness of our Weight Training classes and Off-Season team workouts.  In turn, leading to substantial improvements in our program.  Our  athletes will be able to compete in unison across the room in the same lift, but at a rep and set program that fits the demands of their position or sport.  There are tremendous benefits to this including growth in power, speed, and explosive development as well as safety and constant productivity in the room.

Currently, we rotate stations around the room and are limited as to how many athletes can perform certain lifts in a single session.  This also forces the strength coach to try and coach the fundamentals and keys to the safety of multiple lifts at the same time.  The power racks will correct both of these problems.
